ISLAMABAD -- Hundreds of employees of Pakistan's Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) have taken to the streets of Islamabad against the planned privatization of the country’s state-owned power distribution companies.
The protesters on February 15 came to the Pakistani capital from all over the country, chanting slogans against Prime Minister Imran Khan such as “Go Imran, go!”
They also demanded that the government increase their salaries and make the positions of contractors permanent.
WAPDA employees have held similar protests in several Pakistani cities since early October 2020 against the government’s plans to privatize at least 10 power distribution units.
In 2019, the government had already postponed such plans following mass protests.
