Iranian cinema has a long history of confronting censorship. But the Women, Life, Freedom protests changed the terms of that confrontation. Where filmmakers once worked within, or carefully around, an elaborate approval system to tell their stories, many now bypass it entirely at great risk.
Iranians see Tehran's decision to bring "morality police" back to the streets as an attempt to incite fear among the population. But civilians and lawmakers alike are questioning the effectiveness of the tactic, and women say they "won't go back" to the strict enforcement of such requirements.
