Nursultan Nazarbaev (file photo) (epa) ASTANA, May 15, 2007 (RFE/RL) -- President Nursultan Nazarbaev today said Kazakhstan is taking an important step toward liberalizing politics, RFE/RL's Kazakh Service reported.

He was addressing members of the ruling Nur Otan party and regional governors a day before a bill on constitutional changes is to be presented at a joint session of both chambers of parliament.

Nazarbaev said the changes involve the redistribution of powers from the president to parliament, the increased role of local government bodies, and the development of guarantees on human rights.
