Putin Says Russia Will Pursue Democracy On Its Own

22 February 2005 -- President Vladimir Putin says Russia will pursue democratic change on its own.

Putin said the road to democracy must be adapted to the realities of Russian life, traditions, and history.

He said Russia would not allow the issue to be used by other countries for their foreign-policy goals.

The Russian president made the comments to Slovak media ahead of summit talks with U.S. President George W. Bush in Bratislava on 24 February.
