Washington Police Arrest Antiwar Protesters

The 24 September demonstration in Washington 27 September 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Police in Washington say they have arrested some 370 people who took part in an antiwar protest outside the White House.

Police started making the arrests after protesters ignored repeated orders to leave the area on 26 September. The AFP news agency quotes a police spokesman as saying about 370 people were detained.

Those arrested included prominent antiwar campaigner Cindy Sheehan, the mother of an American soldier who was killed in combat in Iraq last year.

In a separate rally on 26 September in Washington, 41 people were reported arrested during an antiwar protest outside the Pentagon, the U.S. military headquarters.

The protests were held after an estimated 100,000 people attended an antiwar rally in Washington on 24 September.
