Another Administration Official Dismissed In Azerbaijan

President Aliyev (file photo) (epa) 14 November 2005 -- Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev today sacked a third administration chief for alleged interference in last week's parliamentary vote.

Aliyev dismissed Vagif Rahimov, head of the country's northwestern Zakataly region, where the Election Commission had overturned results from the 6 November vote.

The dismissals follow a probe into election irregularities after Western monitors said the vote failed to meet international standards.

Four Azerbaijani election officials have also been arrested.

Opposition groups in Azerbaijan have demanded the election results be overturned nationwide.

According to official results, Aliyev's ruling Yeni Azerbaycan (New Azerbaijan) party won the elections, taking about half the seats in the 125-member National Assembly.
