Carroll's captors said on 17 January that they would kill her unless female Iraqi detainees were released within 72 hours.
The 28-year-old is a freelance reporter for U.S.-based “The Christian Science Monitor” newspaper. She was abducted two weeks ago while on her way to interview a major Sunni Arab political figure. Her translator was killed during the abduction, but her driver escaped.
Yesterday, one of Iraq's most influential Sunni leaders, Adnan al-Dulaimi, publicly called for her release. But the deadline passed without any word of her fate.
