Two Alleged Militants Killed In Daghestan


(RFE/RL) 7 February 2006 -- Security forces have killed two alleged militants in a shoot-out in Russia's southern republic of Daghestan.

The regional Interior Ministry said security forces today surrounded a house in the Caspian Sea port of Kaspiisk where the two were hiding. After the suspects opened fire, security forces returned fire with a rocket launcher, killing the suspected militants.

The Interior Ministry said the two were local residents believed to be members of an Islamic militant group called Shariat.

The ministry said the two were believed to have been preparing terrorist acts in the regional capital Makhachkala and on a railroad. It provided no further details.

Security forces also detained four people suspected of helping the militants.
