Zalmay Khalilzad, the U.S. ambassador to Iraq (file photo) (AFP) March 16, 2006 -- The White House said today that talks between the United States and Iran on Iraq would not include on the agenda the diplomatic crisis over Iran's nuclear program or other major differences between the two countries.
The White House was responding to a statement earlier on March 16 by the head of Iran's National Security Council, Ali Larijani, who said Iran and the United States will "soon" begin talks in an effort to stabilize the situation in Iraq.
Larijani said that the U.S. ambassador to Iraq, Zalmay Khalilzad, had "announced several times that [the United States] would like to [hold talks] since they cannot solve the problems" in Iraq.
