In reports from Baghdad, Italian news agency ANSA and AFP said that Carroll's release was announced by Sunni politician Tariq al-Hashimi. He was quoted as saying that Carroll was currently with him and that she had been freed more than one hour ago.
News agencies later cited both Iraqi police and Carroll's newspaper, "The Christian Science Monitor," as confirming her release.
Carroll, 28, was abducted on January 7 in the Iraqi capital by armed men who killed her translator.
Her twin sister, Katie Carroll, had called for her release on March 29 in a video statement broadcast on Al-Arabiyah television, calling on her captors to show the world that they are humane.
