Senior Russian Official Warns Against Attack On Iran

Igor Ivanov, former Russian foreign minister and current head of Russia's National Security Council (file photo) (CTK) May 11, 2006 -- The head of Russia's National Security Council warned today against the use of military force to resolve the standoff over Iran's nuclear program.

Igor Ivanov said any military action against Iran could "explode" the situation in the region and beyond.

At discussions with other permanent members of the UN Security Council this week, Russia opposed a proposed draft resolution that could open the way to tough measures, and possibly even military action, against Iran if it fails to halt uranium enrichment.
