U.S. troops in Iraq (AFP) June 22, 2006 -- The U.S. Senate has rejected a proposal calling for U.S. combat troops to be withdrawn from Iraq by July 1 next year.

A second proposal -- to start pulling out troops this year, but with no deadline for a complete withdrawal -- was also rejected by the Republican-led Senate.

Both proposals were introduced by the opposition Democratic Party.
