Bomb Attacks In Iraq Kill At Least 40


Iraqi security officers guard the scene of roadside bombing in Baghdad earlier this year (epa) August 1, 2006 -- Three separate bomb attacks in Iraq today left at least 40 people dead.


A car bomb in central Baghdad killed at least 14 people and injured dozens. Police say the death toll from the attack, in the predominantly Shi'ite neighborhood of Al-Karradah, is likely to rise.


North of Baghdad, a roadside bomb struck a military convoy in a village near the city of Bayji. At least 20 Iraqi soldiers died and at least another 13 were injured.


Earlier, a car bomb in the town of Al-Muqdadiyah, northeast of Baghdad, killed at least six people and injured several others.


Meanwhile, Britain's Defense Ministry says a British soldier was killed following a mortar attack today on a base in the southern Iraqi city of Al-Basrah.
