Scores Reported Killed In Baghdad Attacks

(RFE/RL) August 14, 2006 -- More than 60 people have been reported killed and some 140 injured in a coordinated series of attacks in a predominantly Shi'ite area of southern Baghdad.

A municipal official, Muhammad al-Rubaie, is quoted as saying on Iraqi government television that 62 people died in the evening of August 13 during an onslaught in the Al-Zafraniyah neighborhood.

Reports said the attacks occurred at about the same time and included a suicide motorcycle bomber, a rocket barrage, and car bombs.

The attacks are suspected of being part of the Shi'ite-Sunni sectarian violence that has been plaguing Iraq.
