Russia Urges U.S. To Lift Sanctions On Russian Firms

(RFE/RL) October 17, 2006 -- Russia has called on the United States to lift sanctions against two Russian companies accused by Washington of making deals with Iran involving sensitve technology.

Vitaly Churkin, the Russian ambassador to the United Nations, said the
sanctions against Russian state-run arms exporter Rosoboroneksport and
aircraft maker Sukhoi could complicate the situation as Russia takes
part in UN Security Council discussions about possible sanctions on
Iran over its nuclear program.

In other news, Moscow prosecutors have opened a murder investigation into the death of the property manager of the Russian state-run news agency ITAR-TASS.

Officials say Anatoly Voronin, 55, was found dead on October 16 in his Moscow apartment with multiple stab and slash wounds. A prosecutor's spokeswoman said there was no immediate indication that the killing was due to Voronin's work.

Investigators say they are examining a range of possible motives, including that he was killed over a personal dispute.
