Saakashvili Says Gas Hike No 'Catastrophe' For Georgia

An employee of the Russian gas company, Novatek (file photo) (AFP) November 3, 2006 -- Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili says he regrets Russia's decision to hike gas prices to Georgia but doesn't expect it will mean a "catastrophe" for his country.

Saakashvili's comments today in Monaco came as Georgian officials spoke to Russia's Gazprom in a bid to persuade it to reconsider plans to double the price for gas.

Prime Minister Zurab Noghaideli says talks are underway on alternative supplies from Azerbaijan, Iran, and Turkmenistan.
