Iraqi Premier Expects Hussein Execution This Year

Nuri al-Maliki (file photo) (epa) November 8, 2006 -- Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki says he expects deposed Iraqi President Saddam Hussein to be executed by the end of this year.

Al-Maliki said in a BBC interview in Baghdad that if an appeals court confirms the former dictator's sentence of death by hanging, the government has the responsibility to carry it out.

Hussein was sentenced to death on November 5 after being convicted of crimes against humanity over the killing of 148 people following a 1982 assassination attempt against him.
