Russia Reportedly Threatens To Cut Electricity To Azerbaijan

An electricity substation in Azerbaijan (RFE/RL) November 22, 2006 -- Russia has reportedly told Azerbaijan it may cut electricity by 80 percent next year because of a shortage of electricity at home.

An official with the state power company Azerenergo said the warning came from Russia's electricity monopoly Unified Energy System.

Azerbaijan says it may also receive less gas from Russia next year.

Azerbaijan recently pledged to supply Georgia with more gas after Russia demanded a sharp increase in gas payments from Tbilisi.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
