Daughter Of Ousted Kyrgyz President Registered For Poll

Bermet Akaeva (file photo) (RFE/RL) March 23, 2007 -- The daughter of Kyrgyzstan's ousted President Askar Akaev was registered today as a candidate for parliament in an election scheduled for April 29.

Bermet Akaeva is the only member of Akaev's family who has returned to Kyrgyzstan since the country's popular uprising in March 2005.

She is running for a seat representing the northern Kemin district that had been held by her brother, Aidar Akayev. But election officials declared the position vacant because of his failure to attend a single legislative session.

Ten other candidates are contesting the seat -- including former Interior Minister Keneshbek Duyshebayev.
