Pentagon Says Iraq Attacks, Civilian Casualties Up

Two car bombs struck this market in Al-Qurnah on June 8 (epa) June 14, 2007 -- The United States Defense Department says suicide bombings and other attacks have increased in Iraq since the start of the U.S.-led security crackdown in Baghdad in February.

In a required quarterly report to Congress, the Pentagon said the increased attacks during the February-May period resulted in Iraqi civilian casualties rising to as many as 100 per day.

The report said, however, that it was still too early to assess the results of the "surge" of about 30,000 additional U.S. troops to Iraq.
