St. Petersburg, June 17 (RFE/RL) - President Boris Yeltsin decisively won the first round of the presidential election in St. Petersburg.

With 95 percent of the vote counted and the turnout of just over 62 percent, Yeltsin won 49.5 percent of the vote. Liberal reformist Grigory Yavlinsky was a distant second with just over 15 percent, and Communist Gennady Zyuganov was third with nearly 15 percent. He was closely followed by former General Alexander Lebed with 14 percent.

Nationalist Vladimir Zhirinovsky had only just over 2 percent of the vote, while Svyetaslav Fyodorov gained slightly more than 1 percent. All other contenders failed to reach one percent of the vote.
