BISHKEK -- Omurbek Babanov, the leader of Kyrgyzstan's Respublika party, has begun talks with several of the other four parties represented in the parliament on forming a new coalition government, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.
Respublika's press service told RFE/RL that at this point the discussions are focusing only on the general principles for doing so.
President Roza Otunbaeva asked Babanov on December 4 to start forming a coalition government.
Last week, Social Democratic party leader Almazbek Atambaev announced the failure of his attempt to form a three-party coalition, which also included Respublika.
That coalition collapsed after the parties could not reach agreement on electing Ata-Meken party leader Omurbek Tekebaev as parliament speaker.
Babanov has 15 days to form a government. If three consecutive bids to form a coalition fail, new parliamentary elections must be held.
