Brussels is hoping for more Russia-Ukraine gas talks this weekend, our news desk reports:

EU Energy Commissioner Guenther Oettinger says he hopes gas talks between Russia and Ukraine will resume on June 14.

Oettinger was speaking to journalists on June 13 as he arrived for a meeting with EU energy ministers in Luxembourg.

He said he expects both parties to be represented by their energy ministers and the chiefs of their gas companies.

Oettinger said he was willing to meet anywhere.

The latest round of EU-brokered talks broke up on June 11 in Brussels with Ukraine rejecting a Russian offer to reduce its gas price by $100 per 1,000 cubic meters -- from $485 to $385.

Gazprom head Aleksei Miller said on June 12 that Russia would halt supplies should Ukraine fail to come through on a nearly $2 billion debt payment by June 16. (dpa and AFP)

LATEST from our news desk:
The Ukrainian government says its forces have regained control of the rebel-held port city of Mariupol.

Writing on Facebook, Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said government forces raised the national flag over the southeastern city's main administrative building at 1034 local time on June 13.

Five separatists were reported killed and at least two government soldiers wounded in the fighting.

Earlier in the day, Avakov announced that Ukrainian troops had launched a dawn attack on Mariupol.

The offensive is part of a broader military operation to reclaim territory from pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine. (Reuters and Interfax)

Here are some details of a gas-related development from RFE/RL's news desk:
The head of Ukraine's gas company has said that Kyiv may pay some of its overdue payment to Gazprom on June 13 if Russia agrees to charge $326 per 1,000 cubic meters of gas for 18 months.

Naftohaz chief Andrei Kobolev told reporters in Kyiv today that his corporation was "prepared to pay $1.9 billion if we make the deal."

Kobolev said the price of $326 per 1,000 cubic meters -- higher than what Kyiv wants to pay and lower than what Russia demands -- was proposed by the European Commission during recent talks.

Russia has threatened to cut off supplies to Ukraine if it fails to start paying off billions of dollars in debt by June 16.

Meanwhile, EU Energy Commissioner Guenther Oettinger said he hopes gas talks between Russia and Ukraine will resume tomorrow.
