Amnesty International says hundreds of people have been abducted in eastern Ukraine during the past three months -- mostly by pro-Russian separatists -- and most of the victims are being tortured.

Armed pro-Russian separatists continued to strengthen their positions in and around Donetsk on July 10 despite a warning from Kyiv that a plan was now in place to take back the territory they occupied. Ukraine's army tightened its grip on Donetsk on July 10 by moving forces closer to the rebel-held city. Soldiers dug up trenches, set up tents, and tested military vehicles at a new camp on the road between Kostyantynivka and Donetsk. (Reuters)

At least four Ukrainian troops and five coal miners were reported killed on July 11 in the east of the country amid a continued government offensive against pro-Russian separatists.
The miners were killed after the bus they were traveling in reportedly came under mortar fire.
Two soldiers and at least one border guard were killed after their armored vehicle drove over a land mine near the Russian border.
Another soldier was killed in an incident near the town of Karlovka in the Donetsk region.
Military spokesman Vladyslav Seleznyov said at least 50 separatist fighters had been killed in the last few days following government air strikes. (Reuters, UNIAN, and Interfax)
