Good morning. We'll start the live blog today with a report from our news desk on John Kerry's trip to Sochi.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is due to meet on May 12 in the Black Sea resort of Sochi with Russian President Vladimir Putin to explore political solutions to the conflict in eastern Ukraine and the war in Syria.

It will be Kerry's first visit to Russia in two years.

Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov has confirmed Putin's meeting with Kerry, who is also due to meet with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov.

Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said the two men would discuss the implementation of the shaky ceasefire deal that took effect in eastern Ukraine in February as well as conflicts in the Middle East.

Kerry is said to believe that Russia is troubled, like the United States and the European Union, by thousands of Westerners being drawn into the violence in Syria and potentially exporting it back home to their own countries.

Many of the commanders of the Islamic State militant group are Chechen.

From Sochi, Kerry will leave for Turkey, where he will attend a NATO meeting, and then immediately fly back to Washington to attend a summit between President Barack Obama and Arab leaders.
