KIROV, Russia -- Two people in the Russian city of Kirov used fake documents to present themselves as fire inspectors and collect fines from local businesses, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

Aleksei Neustroev, spokesman for the Emergency Situations Ministry in Kirov Oblast, told RFE/RL that local police are looking for the two who fined local businesses and kiosks for failing to meet fire-safety requirements.

A nightclub fire in the Russian city of Perm on December 5 that killed at least 141 people has led to the mass inspection of private businesses across Russia, a situation the impostors took advantage of.

Neustroev said the fake inspectors demanded that fines be paid on the spot, which seemed suspicious to some business owners who later contacted police about the fake inspectors.
