SHAKHTINSK, Kazakhstan -- Several inmates of Dolinka prison in Kazakhstan's central Qaraghandy Oblast have deliberately injured themselves, RFE/RL's Kazakh Service reports.

The jail's warden Qaydar Sarin told RFE/RL that five prisoners had slashed open their stomachs on June 3.

He said that the prisoners were hospitalized in the town of Shakhtinsk and that their current status is stable.

Kazakh human rights activist Vadim Kuramshin, who has been monitoring the situation in Dolinka for some time, told RFE/RL that the prisoners were protesting the way they were treated by prison guards.

Kuramshin said he was informed about the incident by Galina Karaush, the mother of one of the prisoners in question, Yevgeny Karaush.
