Militant Kills Self, Wounds 10 Police In Chechnya

Russian police say a militant in the country's volatile North Caucasus region has blown himself up with a homemade grenade.

A police spokesman, Magomed Khamchiyev, says the incident occurred in Chechnya's capital, Grozny, today during a raid on a suspected rebel hideout.

The spokesman says the militant detonated an improvised grenade when police approached after an exchange of fire.

The rebel was killed instantly and 10 police officers were injured -- one critically -- in the explosion.

Police and security forces are in constant battle with separatist rebels fighting to throw off Moscow's rule in the mainly Muslim North Caucasus.
