Montenegro, Kosovo Establish Diplomatic Ties

Montenegro has established diplomatic relations with Kosovo.

The Montenegrin government said in a statement today that diplomatic relations were established by exchange of letters of the respective foreign ministers.

However, the statement said the exchange of ambassadors was delayed until Kosovo agreed to grant formal minority status to the several thousand Montenegrins there.

The establishment of formal diplomatic relations is expected to anger Serbia, which rejects Kosovo's 2008 declaration of independence.

Serbia expelled Montenegro's ambassador after Montenegro recognized Kosovo's independence in October 2008.
