Russia Ruling Party Withdraws Support For Kaliningrad Governor

Russia's ruling party has decided not to reappoint the governor of a Russian region that saw an anti-Kremlin protest earlier this year because he was not sufficiently popular.

Georgy Boos, governor of the Kaliningrad region, was excluded from the list of three candidates proposed on August 16 for the post by the United Russia party to President Dmitry Medvedev. Boos's current term as governor is due to come to an end in the coming weeks.

Kaliningrad -- before World War II part of German East Prussia -- is an exclave wedged between EU members Lithuania and Poland with strong economic ties to Europe.

On January 30, more than 10,000 people attended a demonstration in Kaliningrad opposing Boos and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.
