Bulgarian national television reported on February 5 that investigators have detained an employee from the Interior Ministry's unit fighting organized crime on suspicion of spying for Moscow. Bulgaria's State Agency for National Security was quoted as saying that the person allegedly passed classified data to "Russian agents," including a former employee of the Russian Embassy in Sofia who was designated as persona non grata. In November, Bulgaria expelled Aleksandr Gatsak, a correspondent for the state-owned Rossiyskaya Gazeta, who Sofia said posed "a threat to national security."
