Chechnya’s strongman leader has appointed another close relative to a top position in the government of the North Caucasus region. At a government meeting on July 1, Ramzan Kadyrov said he was tapping his 27-year-old nephew, Khamzat Kadyrov, to be secretary of the region’s Security Council, a grouping of top law enforcement and security officials. The position is the latest in a series that Kadyrov has filled recently with his extended family. Last month, he appointed another nephew as the region’s transport minister, one month after naming his 18-year-old son, Akhmat, head of the department in charge of sports and youth affairs.
