Chinese President Xi Jinping departs on September 3 for a 10-day foreign tour that will take in five countries and two major summits.
Xi will visit Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Russia between September 3 and September 13. He will participate in the September 5-6 G20 summit in St. Petersburg and the September 13 summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Bishkek.
During the Central Asian portion of his trip, Xi will seek to intensify trade and economic relations. He will also discuss regional security in the context of the withdrawal of NATO-led combat forces from Afghanistan by the end of 2014.
China has been Central Asia's largest trading partner since 2010 and has actively promoted regional infrastructure projects, including improvements in railroads, roads, aviation, telecommunications, and energy.
