Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao said today that Beijing was ready to extend Europe a "helping hand from afar" in its debt crisis and could buy the sovereign debt of some eurozone nations if needed.

Wen, speaking at a joint news conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin, highlighted China's support for the euro, saying Beijing has confidence in the 17-nation currency.

China and Germany signed more than $15 billion worth of deals today on the sidelines of Wen's visit.

The agreements, inked after the German and Chinese governments held their first joint cabinet meeting, included an order for 62 A320 aircraft from European aircraft manufacturer Airbus reportedly worth 7 billion euros.

China and Germany are the world's second- and fourth-biggest economies and the world's largest two exporters.

Wen arrived in Germany from a trip to Britain.
