A Russian prosecutor on June 22 asked for a 19-year sentence for reporter Abdulmumin Gadzhiyev and his two co-defendants from the North Caucasus region and Daghestan on charges of financing terrorism that the three men and their supporters reject as politically motivated. Gadzhiyev's colleagues have said his arrest in 2019 was based on a "trumped-up" charge that was based on testimony from another suspect, who subsequently said that police extracted his testimony by torture.
