The European Court of Human Rights has called on Ukraine's government to ensure that jailed former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko receives "adequate medical treatment in an appropriate institution."
The court said that if her prison did not have adequate medical equipment and specialists, international standards required that she receive adequate treatment elsewhere.
On March 15, Ukrainian officials said Tymoshenko was denied her request for medical treatment outside of prison, where she is serving a seven-year sentence on charges of abuse of office.
Tymoshenko has refused medical treatment at the prison, saying she does not trust the doctors there.
Tymoshenko's daughter, Yevhenia, says she suffers constant and intense pain from a spinal hernia.
German doctors who examined Tymoshenko earlier this month concluded that she urgently needs complex treatment at a specialized facility.
