BRUSSELS -- The European Commission has pledged 470 million euros ($650 million) in financial assistance to Ukraine aimed at boosting the rule of law and good governance in the country.
The deal was signed by EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fuele and Ukraine's deputy prime minister, Andriy Klyuyev.
Klyuyev was in Brussels to discuss the negotiations of an association agreement and comprehensive free trade agreement between his country and the EU. The association agreement would deepen Ukraine's political and economic integration with Brussels.
Fuele said he believed the negotiations, which started in 2008, could be concluded by the end of the year.
He also highlighted a number of issues which remain, such as electoral and judicial reforms, and issues concerning human rights.
