Representatives of U.S. automaker General Motors (GM) have broken ground on an expansion of its plant in St. Petersburg.
The expansion of the plant is part of GM plans that will see the company invest $1 billion in its Russian operations during the next five years and includes increasing production at the GM-AvtoVAZ plant in Tolyatti.
Together the two plants will eventually have a production capacity of some 350,000 vehicles.
GM Chairman and CEO Dan Ackerson was at the June 22 ceremony and noted Russia was one of the world's fastest-growing vehicle markets.
GM's partner in the project is Russia's Federal Ministry of Economic Development.
The expansion will add an additional 1,500 workers to the plant.
