Firefighters Battle Blaze In Georgia's Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park

Some 100 firefighters are battling a wildfire that broke out in Georgia's Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park on August 20.

The Interior Ministry said on August 21 that the fire in the mountains near the village of Daba, in south-central Georgia, has expanded to an area of more than five hectares.

High winds and heavy smoke are impeding efforts to contain the blaze and restricting the use of helicopters, the ministry said.

It said the steep, rugged landscape makes it very difficult to use firefighting machinery.

Wildfires have broken out across the South Caucasus country this summer, including in the capital, amid unusually high temperatures.

Large fires were extinguished in four other districts on August 20, the Interior Ministry said.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
