Georgian Justice Minister Condemns Attack Against ENM Official

Georgia's Justice Minister Tea Tsulukiani has condemned the assault against a leading member of the opposition United National Movement (ENM) party.

In a statement on May 28, Tsulukiani called on law-enforcement officials to thoroughly investigate the attack against Zurab Chiaberashvili.

Chiaberashvili, one of ENM's leading figures, was beaten in a Tbilisi cafe on May 27.

The attack left Chiaberashvili with head injuries.

Chiaberashvili was Georgia's ambassador to Switzerland and served as Tbilisi mayor, health minister, and governor of the Kakheti region under former President Mikheil Saakashvili.

He told journalists on May 27 that he and a companion were attacked by two men, both of whom he said he recognized.

Saakashvili's ENM lost in parliamentary elections in October 2012 to the Georgian Dream political alliance and turned into an opposition party.
