Security Forces Raid Five Iranian Newspapers

Iranian security forces are reported to have arrested more than a dozen journalists in raids on five newspapers in Tehran.

The Iranian Mehr news agency said the journalists were detained on allegations of links to "antirevolutionary media” – a term used by Iranian authorities to refer to foreign-based media such as RFE/RL’s Radio Farda, the Voice of America, and the BBC.

The raids are described as the largest operation targeting relatively independent Iranian media outlets since the 2009 protest campaign by Iranians following the disputed reelection of President Mahmud Ahmadinejad.

The five targeted news outlets comprise the “Etemad,” “Arman,” “Shargh,” and “Bahar" dailies, as well as “Aseman” magazine.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
