Tens of thousands of pro-European Union supporters have rallied in Kyiv and gathered on the city's Independence Square for a fifth straight Sunday.
Leader of the opposition UDAR party Vitaly Klitschko addressed the crowd telling the demonstrators, "We have a reform plan, and there is only one way -- early presidential and parliamentary elections."
Western news agencies reported the December 22 turnout appeared to be the lowest since the rallies started in late November after the government announced it was suspending work on a trade agreement with the EU and instead would seek closer economic ties with neighbor Russia.
Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych met with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, last week and signed a deal for Ukraine to receive Russian gas at roughly a 33-percent lower price.
