The Moscow City Court on July 11 rejected an appeal filed by veteran rights activist Oleg Orlov against his imprisonment. The 71-year-old's 30-month prison sentence, handed to him in February on a charge of repeatedly discrediting Russia's military, now comes into force. The charge stems from Orlov's public condemnation of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Orlov gained prominence as one of Russia's leading human rights activists after he co-founded the Memorial human rights center following the collapse of the Soviet Union. For his contribution to human rights in Russia, Orlov was awarded the Sakharov Prize in 2009. Memorial was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2022.
