The European Union has filed a case with the World Trade Organization (WTO) against Russia's decision to ban pork exports from the 28-nation bloc.
EU Trade Commissioner Karel de Gucht said in a statement on April 8 that "Russia's blanket ban on European pork is clearly disproportionate and goes against WTO rules."
De Gucht said the EU had "no choice" but to take Russia before the WTO.
Russia imposed the ban on EU pork in January, citing fears of contagion after cases of swine fever were detected in Lithuania and Poland.
And on April 8, Russia said it was banning imports of pork from Moldova.
An official at Russia's Rosselkhoznadzor agricultural agency said such products, falsely identified, had arrived to Russia from Moldova but it turned out the pork had originally come from Germany or Belgium.
