An explosion and fire at a major pipeline transporting Russia's natural gas from Siberia to Europe via Ukraine killed three workers on December 20. Authorities in Russia's Chuvashia region say a gas leak might have caused the blast. A day earlier, a fire hit a natural gas field in the Siberian region of Irkutsk, injuring seven people, two of whom remain in serious condition.
