Russian Sports Official Calls Doping Charges 'Pack Of Lies'

The chief of Russia's track and field association says a German television program alleging widespread doping and cover-ups among Russian athletes contains "a pack of lies."

The documentary, broadcast by ARD on December 3, alleges that Russia is funding an "East German-style" doping program for athletes.

The program alleges corruption among high-ranking Russian officials and systematic doping among Russian athletes.

On December 4, Russian Athletics Federation President Valentin Balakhnichev said the program is "unfair" and contains "a pack of lies."

The federation will hold an emergency meeting on December 4 and Balakhnichev said he will offer a "fuller commentary" after reviewing the situation.

The Russian Antidoping Agency said there is nothing to support the allegations.

The World Anti-Doping Agency said any issues in the documentary would be "fully investigated."

Based on reporting by Reuters, AFP, and guardian.co.uk

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
