The Novaya gazeta Europe newspaper quoted sources on August 13 as saying that Temirlan Eskerkhanov, one of five men imprisoned for their roles in the assassination of Russian opposition leader Boris Nemtsov in 2015, is guarding industrial facilities in the Russian-occupied Ukrainian city of Mariupol. Media reports said last week that Eskerkhanov, who was sentenced to 14 years in prison in 2017, had been pardoned in March after he joined a Russian assault brigade fighting in Ukraine. Novaya gazeta Europe's sources said, however, that Eskerkhanov did not take part in combat operations but "comfortably" guards sites in Mariupol and regularly visits his native Chechnya.
