A toddler has died in western Russia after falling through a hole that opened up as his mother took him for a walk.
Officials said the pavement in the city of Bryansk gave way because of a burst hot-water pipe.
Reports said the boy's mother, named as Tatyana Didenko, was pulled alive from the hole by her husband and taken to hospital in shock.
He was unable, however, to rescue his one-and-a-half-year-old son, whose body was later recovered.
Investigators have opened a criminal manslaughter investigation into the case.
