Police in Russia's restive North Caucasus region of Daghestan say three armed militants have been killed in the city of Buinaksk.
Authorities say the three had been holed up in an apartment on the fourth floor of a residential building since late on October 4.
They refused to surrender and opened fire at security troops.
A special operation to liquidate the group was launched.
Police and sappers are working at the scene to identify the killed militants and secure the site's safety.
The operation was launched hours after police and security troops killed four suspected militants in another incident in the same area.
Violence between suspected Islamic militants and security forces in Russia's North Caucasus region leaves dozens of people dead and injured each year.
