Petro Poroshenko's comments to journalists after voting in Kyiv:
"I think that the most important thing is that Ukrainian people today [are choosing] a leader of their country. I want to assure you that [the future] president of Ukraine [is being] elected not by western leaders, not by eastern leaders, but by the people of Ukraine and the fact that we have such a high level of attendance of the election is very good evidence that Ukrainian people are already making their own choice."

"Kharkiv is voting, Zaporizhia is voting, Dnipropetrovsk is voting -- only terrorists stop the voting right of the people of Ukraine living there from being realized. But many people are [coming even to] the closed polling stations because it's only people with machine-guns who do not allow them to [cast a ballot]. We [shall] remove those [armed with] machine-guns, those terrorists from all streets, cities, and villages of Ukraine."

"I think that Ukraine can win in the first round because the sooner we stop the war, the sooner we stop the corruption, the sooner we start European integration, and the sooner we [can] establish democracy in the country."

"Crimea was, is, and will be Ukrainian. There is not a single claim in favor of recognizing the legitimacy of the Crimean referendum. I am sure a Crimean Affairs Ministry will soon be created to deal with the three main issues. First, coordination of steps to reclaim Crimea with the use of all available mechanisms -- judicial, political, security, international, economic mechanisms -- all of them."
